El delfín chileno Cephalorhynchus eutropia (Bosc, 1802) es un cetáceo endémico de América del Sur. En este estudio se presenta el hallazgo de larvas de Phyllobothrium delphini (Cestoda, Tetraphyllidea) en la grasa subcutánea de un espécimen varado y muerto de delfín chileno. El hallazgo ocurrió en aguas de la costa centro-sur de Chile. Además, se destacan aspectos del ciclo de vida de este parásito que causa la infección en C. eutropia en aguas chilenas. Cistos de P. delphini han sido reportados previamente en varios mamíferos marinos, pero no en C. eutropia. Por lo tanto, este hallazgo constituye el primer registro de P. delphini en un delfín chileno.
The Chilean dolphin Cephalorhynchus eutropia (Bosc, 1802), is an endemic cetacean of South America. In this study, the finding of Phyllobothrium delphini larvae (Cestoda, Tetraphyllidea) in the subcutaneous blubber of a stranded and dead specimen of Chilean dolphin, is presented. The finding occurred in waters of the central-south coast of Chile. In addition, aspects of the life cycle of this parasite causing the infection of C. eutropia in Chilean waters are emphasized. Cysts of P. delphini have been previously reported in several marine mammals but not in C. eutropia. Thus, this finding constitutes the first report of P. delphini in a Chilean dolphin.
